Minutes from the last IPPA PTA Meeting

Dear Members:

Just wanted to give a brief summary of last Tuesday's General Meeting.

Treasurer's report and March minutes were approved.

Elections were held with the following results:

President - Audrey Clair
1st Vice President - Laura Swanson
2nd Vice President - Kay Goshay
Secretary - Neeta Gautam
Treasurer - Ilona Sengupta

Many thanks to Linda Swier and Laura McDonnell for their service to IPPA PTA.  As 1st VP and Membership Chair, Laura McDonnell, gave IPPA PTA a great start and the PTA earned several membership awards this year.  As 2nd VP and Liaison Chair, Linda was instrumental in providing a contact at the district schools.

Upcoming events were discussed.
Chess has been scheduled for 4/30 from 9 - noon at Fischer.  This will be casual play and open to all.
"I Survived the Science Fair" had many comments and will be handled by committee.  Currently on the committee are Sangeeta Agarwal, Tami Wagner, Audrey Clair, Kay Goshay, Neeta Gautam and Archana Sharma.  Please send a note to https://webmail.ipsd.org/redir.aspx?C=71ad081e408a41e28b2a1b08152da916&URL=mailto%3aippa.pta%40gmail.com if you would like to join the committee.

Discussion on ideas from speaker, Newenka DuMont and Race to Nowhere included support for the idea of testing students on an upcoming unit and if they showed mastery of the subject, they would be given alternate work.  Also the downside if the students tests out of too many units.  Middle school test scores for admittance into the PA program were discussed including the role of teacher comments.  Jeanine Buishas explained the advantages of multiple input into the decision and also indicated that high test scores alone will gain a student admittance regardless of the other forms of input.

STEM meeting was announced.
May 1st, 2:30-4:30 at Mathnasium on Route 59 south of Dominick's.

Many members shared STEM programs their children were involved in during the year and summertime.  Jeanine told the group of a STEM article in NAGC Parenting magazine.

Audit committee will be selected via email.  Linda Swier has volunteered.  We need two more people to fill the committee.  Please email https://webmail.ipsd.org/redir.aspx?C=71ad081e408a41e28b2a1b08152da916&URL=mailto%3aippa.pta%40gmail.com if you can assist with this simple task.

Executive Board for IPPA PTA is made up of the executive commitee (elected officers) and 3-4 members at large.  If you are intersted in being on the Board which meets 4-5 times per year, please send a note to https://webmail.ipsd.org/redir.aspx?C=71ad081e408a41e28b2a1b08152da916&URL=mailto%3aippa.pta%40gmail.com

As a seperate note - the Indian Prairie Parents Council's General Meeting is this Thursday 4/21 at 9:30am at CEC.  Our regular representative, Brian Prince, cannot attend.  If you would like to represent IPPA at this meeting and relay what is new in the district, please email  . . . you guessed it . . . https://webmail.ipsd.org/redir.aspx?C=71ad081e408a41e28b2a1b08152da916&URL=mailto%3aippa.pta%40gmail.com
